The Amazing Spiderman 2

Hollywood is getting lazier and lazier by just making sequels to movies that have already been done, rather than use some of their creativity and think of a completely new idea. Fortunately, in terms of The Amazing Spider Man 2 sequel series based off the comic book and the first set of movies with Tobey Maguire, despite the mixed reviews from the critics, I loved it! I am not a big superhero guy, unlike my roommate David who was very upset with me for not taking him with me to see this new Spiderman movie, I have seen mostly every superhero movie and I would have to say this was better than The Avengers (2nd Highest Grossing Movie of All Time) but worse than The Dark Knight Rises. The storyline plays out with Peter Parker aka Spiderman and Gwen (The female love interest), graduate high school and soon after break-up because she cannot deal with Peter always putting her second to fighting crime. The rest of the movie is Spiderman fighting a new enemy named Electro who obtained his crazy electricity powers after a freak accident at his workplace of Oscorp where he fell in a pit of eels. The Green Goblin comes back to play in this movie and spoiler alert he kills Gwen, the love of Spiderman’s life. Spiderman spirals into a deep depression because everyone whom he cares about ends up dying.

This is where the RSI model comes into use when analyzing this movie from a need perspective. When Spiderman is around and looking after New York City, everything isn’t perfect but it is as close as it can be considering NYC is one of the biggest epicenters of the world. After Gwen dies, Spiderman puts away his mask and hangs up his uniform while the City he holds so dear falls into chaos. You can analyze this part of the movie through a need lens because Spiderman’s fellow inhabitants need him to come back to watch over and protect everyone in the city. The RSI model exclaims that people have a natural need to construct a meaningful and ordered world (Brown, 1978). This is exactly what the people of New York City were trying to do in The Amazing Spiderman 2, by needing Spiderman to come back and keep an eye out for the crimes and look after the inhabitants of his city.

The shift from having Spiderman on a daily basis fighting crime and looking out for the little guy to suddenly one day not having him at all is dynamic. This shift creates a huge shift in need when the citizens of New York City realize that they actually do need Spiderman to come back and out things back in order. The population of NYC have backgrounded the civil duties of protection that Spiderman does for the city while he is in full force but right when he goes missing, the citizens foreground the need for Spiderman as a savior for their city.

Once again, Heather and I have already given our poster presentation and turned in our final draft of our critical incident paper.
